ENT, Head And Neck Surgery

What is ENT, Head And Neck Surgery

Also known as “Otorhinolaryngology”, this is a surgical subspecialty that involves the ears, nose and throat. This specialty also relates to the head and neck structures.

Ear

Hearing problems can affect people of all ages but are more common among children and senior citizens. Distressing and painful, even slight problems in your ears can appear magnified, no thanks to their proximity to your brain. If you are ‘hearing things’, our ENT, Head & Neck Laser experts will conduct a thorough assessment of your ear canal and provide effective treatment measures. External ear infections include:

  • Middle ear infections
  • Facial nerve disorder
  • Giddiness/Vertigo
  • Hearing loss (Hearing assessment)
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears)
  • Foreign body removal

Nose

Breathing problems due to nasal problems can have long-term impact on quality of life as they affect sleep, speech, productivity and energy levels. In children, nasal problems can disrupt learning and behaviour. Speak to our specialists if you or a loved one have the abnormal habit of breathing through the mouth. Common problems of the nose and surrounding structures include:

  • Sinus infections
  • Nasal polyps
  • Nasal congestion
  • Airway blockage
  • Nosebleeds
  • Deviated septum

Throat

In the same way the eyes are the windows to the soul, your voice is an outlet for creative expression. Having a healthy throat that is free of obstruction ensures you can articulate your thoughts and emotions clearly. In elderly patients, throat problems resulting in swallowing difficulties can affect food intake and general nutrition. Seek help from our specialists to clear this important passage.

  • Larynx (voice box)
  • Swallowing disorder
  • Tonsillitis
  • Snoring/Sleep apnoea
  • Foreign body removal (eg. bones, dentures, coins)

Mouth

Did you know the mouth is the beginning of the entire digestive system? Saliva acts as a natural enzyme that kicks off the breakdown of food, while helping the teeth turn food into mush before it enters the throat and down the digestive tract. Having mouth problems not only affects your food intake and nutritional status but also speech and social interaction. Our specialists will help you resolve your oral issues with the right combination of medication and lifestyle changes.

  • Tongue ulcers
  • Cysts
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Post-radiation follow-ups (eg. dry mouth)

Head and Neck

The head is often referred to as the ‘motherboard’ of the entire body, as it contains the brain, eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Needless to say, any problems to this important part of the anatomy may affect the whole body. The neck acts as a bridge connecting the head to the rest of the body. More critical is the fact that it holds the spinal cord intact. Check with our specialists if you notice any abnormalities around your head or neck area such as growths, swelling or pain.

  • Head and neck conditions (eg parotid disorder)
  • Neck lumps
  • Headaches

Paediatric ENT

Small children are often unable to articulate their pain or discomfort. As a result, they will cry continuously and appear cranky and clingy. Look out for tell-tale signs such as pulling at the ear, breathing through the mouth, not responding to loud sounds or not answering when their name is called. Trained to recognise paediatric distress, our specialist will provide your child (and you!) relief through the right diagnosis and treatment of ENT-related problems.

  • Nasal allergies
  • Hearing & speech disorders
  • Adenoids/Tonsil removal
  • Otitis media
  • Ear infections

Everything You Should Know About Seeking ENT Specialists’ Help At Thomson Hospital

Whenever you encounter problems with your ears, nose or throat, it is important to seek the help of ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) specialists.

An ENT doctor specializes in diagnosing and treating any problems that affect the ear, throat and nose.

Therefore, you should seek treatment whenever you encounter any of the following symptoms:

  • Nose congestion or bleeding
  • Neck swelling/irritation
  • Persistent sore throat (lasting more than seven days)
  • A persistent ear infection that results in pain, hearing loss, and/or dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears at random times or frequently
  • Small lumps or abnormal growths on the neck and head
  • Chronic breathing problems
  • Chronic hoarseness in the voice as a result of smoking or alcohol consumption

The ENT specialist will utilize their tools to diagnose your condition and take appropriate action. If the problem is minor, no surgical procedure will be necessary.

However, in more chronic cases, the ENT specialist may perform any of the following procedures:

  • Myringotomy (ear drum cutting surgery)
  • Excisional Biopsy (removal of affected lymph nodes and neck lesions)
  • Nasal Cautery (application of a special device to stop nose bleeding)
  • Aural polypectomy (removal of aural growths in the external ear canal)
  • Adenoidectomy (removal of tiny lumps inside the nose that cause breathing issues)
  • Removal of a foreign body
  • Excision/removal of a cyst
