Preparing to Visit the Oncologist

Dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be stressful and takes a lot of planning. We’ve created a guide to help you prepare for your first visit to the oncologist. Below that, we also have a guide for returning patients.

Preparing for your first visit to the oncologist

Step

01

Schedule an appointment

Appointments will be made either by the healthcare personnel upon confirming the diagnosis or you may arrange your own appointment through our hospital’s official website.

Step

02

Organise medical records

Bring all the necessary medical documents, e.g. CT scan result, blood test results, to enable the oncologist to review prior to discussing further treatment.

Step

03

Preparing for your visit

Bring your loved one during your visit to the oncologist to participate in the discussion of treatment options. Bring all the current medications that you are taking so that your oncologist is aware of your health status. Ask questions during the consultation to better understand your condition and the treatments that you are going to receive.

Returning patients

Step

01

Registration

On arrival for your scheduled appointment, you must first be registered either at the clinic or admission counter. The nurses will guide you to where you can register.

Step

02

Blood taking

Blood taking is necessary prior to each systemic treatment to assess if you are fit for treatment.

Step

03

Treatment

The oncologist will review the blood test results and assess your condition to determine whether you can proceed for your systemic therapy for the day.

If the oncologist deems you fit, you may proceed with systemic therapy.

If you are not fit for systemic therapy, the oncologist will decide what other type of treatment, e.g blood transfusion, Granulocytes Colony Stimulating Factors injection, can be given before discharging you and scheduling another date for your systemic therapy.

Step

04

Treatment delivery

Upon confirming you are fit for systemic therapy, pharmacists will prepare your drugs. You will be started on IV hydration and premedications will be given as prescribed prior to IV systemic therapy. IV systemic therapy will be administered half an hour after premedications are given.

Step

05

Discharge

You may proceed with discharge after completing systemic therapy and after receiving clearance from your insurance company, or after you have settled the bill. Your next appointment date and a copy of your blood test result will be given to you upon discharge. Collect your take home medications at the Ground Floor pharmacy before heading home.

Follow up

You will still need to follow up with the oncologist upon completing your chemotherapy course to monitor your progress.
